Ah, Boot Camp! 12
weeks of someone else telling you everything to do! There's a LOT I
remember about Boot Camp; but mostly how damned near every waking minute
there was something to be done.
I got put in charge of everyone on the bus from LA to San Diego. Boxing up all our stuff to send home. Stenciling our names on all our clothing. Buzzcut haircuts! Firing a rifle. Firefighting school. The mock ship they had for us to practice on. People waiting in a line for you to complete your dump. Midnight watches in the barracks and on the bridge between worm island and the advanced side. Gulls eating the snot off the ground. Everyone but one person getting a penicillin shot in the same cheek and limping in unison. Standing at attention for hours. Our second(!) Company Commander knocking the crap out of a couple of guys. If you didn't smoke there was something for you to do while everyone else took a smoke break.
Boot liberty (SD Zoo and a strip joint). Graduation!!! Finding out if you were headed to Viet Nam or not. |
