USS-Turner-Joy

USS Turner Joy (DD-951), San Diego, Ca.

Dates... (81-83?)

Standing by for VERTREP waiting for the helo. Sick Bay was a mess when I first took over. Worked long hard hours for six months getting it back in shape. First (and only) WESTPAC. I really enjoyed being 'at sea'. Ens Steve Crow set his Apple IIe up in sick bay and I spent a lot of time learning to program it in basic.

Don Richards, Parker Dinwittie. HM3 "Tavo" Octavio. HN Hudeck. Most of my friends were the Engineering types or Boatswains Mates. Boats Kelly Verbic.

WESTPAC was a trip! We almost sank in the South China Sea. We were shot at by a fisherman with a machine gun and stayed at GQ for several hours. Rescued 6 (or so) Vietnam Refugees from a small boat. Liberty at Pattaya Beach was something else! Liberty in Hong Kong, Kagoshima, Japan, Subic, Korea and other places we stopped was fun. Spent a LOT of time at flight quarters. Spent a lot of time sitting in a rescue boat waiting for an airplane to crash on Carrier detail. Did the Shore Patrol thing in Hong Kong and Pattaya Beach. Bought a 'portable' Camcorder in Japan and taped the last half of WESTPAC. Stopped in San Francisco and had a Tiger Cruise back to San Diego.

They decommissioned the Turner Joy about a month after we got back. Bummer!

HM1

My favorite position in Sick Bay.
